German vice chancellor visits site of violent anti-refugee riots
Decisive action must be taken against right-wing protesters who rioted in front a shelter for asylum seekers in eastern Germany at the weekend, the country's vice chancellor said Monday.

Berlin (dpa) - "The people spreading this violence must not be given a millimetre of space," Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in the town of Heidenau, near Dresden.
"The people spreading this violence must not be given a millimetre of space," Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said in the town of Heidenau, near Dresden.

The town‘s mayor, Juergen Opitz, said Chancellor Angela Merkel should also visit the scene of the riots, which left more than 30 police officers injured.

"I hope ... to welcome Mrs Merkel here no later than the day after tomorrow," he told reporters.

Merkel‘s spokesman said the chancellor condemned the "repulsive" violence.

"It is repulsive how the far-right and neo-Nazis are attempting to spread their message of hate to a refugee facility," Steffan Seibert said in Berlin.

Early Saturday, police used tear gas to disperse several hundred right-wing extremists who blocked a road leading to a hardware store that had been retrofitted to serve as a temporary housing facility for up to 600 refugees, the first of whom began moving in at the weekend.

The fighting started after a peaceful demonstration organized by the neo-Nazi NPD party devolved into a brawl that saw several hundred ultra-nationalist protesters throwing stones, bottles and firecrackers at police.

By Sunday night police had increased security at the refugee shelter and, for the first time, deployed water cannon should they need to disperse protesters.
