Vatican City (dpa) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un wants Pope Francis to visit Pyongyang, the presidency of South Korea said on Tuesday.

South Korean President Moon Jae In will pass on the invitation from Kim when he visits the Vatican next week, a spokesman for the presidency in Seoul told reporters.

Kim said he would welcome the pope "with enthusiasm" if Francis comes to the North Korean capital, the spokesman said.

The Vatican did not comment on Kim‘s offer, but confirmed an October 18 meeting between Francis and Moon. The Vatican said the South Korean leader would also attend an October 17 "Peace Mass" for the Korean Peninsula in St Peter‘s Basilica.

Pope Francis visited South Korea in 2014. At the time he said "the two Koreas are siblings ... the suffering of division is great and I understand this and I pray that it ends."
