Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - American Katie Ledecky and Sweden‘s Sarah Sjostrom recovered from world record performances late Sunday to cruise through the heats of the women‘s 200-metre freestyle in Rio Monday.

Both women reduced their own world records, Ledecky in the 400m free and Sjostrom in the 100m butterfly to claim Olympic golds, but had no problem in easing into the semi-finals of the 200m freestyle.

Ledecky topped the lists from Australian Emma McKeon with Sjostrom third while Italian world record holder Federica Pellegrini was fifth.

"It was pretty hard coming off of last night," Ledecky said. "Just got a couple hours of sleep but I think that was probably going to be my hardest swim of the week so I‘m glad it‘s over with."

In the men‘s 200m butterfly reigning world champion Laszlo Cseh of Hungary was beaten into second by compatriot Tamas Kenderesi. The 2012 Olympic gold medallist Chad Le Clos took third while American great Michael Phelps, after winning his 19th Olympic gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay Sunday, eased through in fifth.

"I‘ve been a little off in my predictions to make into semis and finals," Phelps admitted. "I wanted to be somewhere in the front of the heats."

And in the women‘s 200m individual medley, Hungary‘s Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu started her bid for a second Rio gold with an Olympic record to top the heats. She has already won the 400m version of the discipline in world record time.

Later Monday there finals in the men‘s 200m freestyle, men‘s and women‘s 100m backstroke and the women‘s 100m breaststroke which includes the twice-banned Russian Yulia Efimova.
