Valerie Adams came ever so close to becoming the the first woman to complete a hat-trick of Olympic golds in the same event - denied by Michelle Carter who upstages her father Michael Carter.

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - The list of back-to-back Olympic champions in a women‘s individual athletics event is an elite one, including the likes of American sprinter Wyomia Tyus, Romanian high jumper Iolanda Balas and Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva.

Valerie Adams had all but bested them all on Friday night before American Michelle Carter denied her becoming the first woman to complete a hat-trick of Olympic golds in the same event.

After a colourful introduction with the help of a samba band, Adams shocked the opposition with a second-round season best put of 20.42 metres, while Carter was a solid second with 19.87m from the fourth round.

But Carter wanted more, and with it upstage her father and coach Michael Carter, a three-time Super Bowl winner with the San Francisco 49ers who had won Olympic silver in the same event as his daughter 1984 in Los Angeles.

With just Carter and Adams left to go in the final round, the American unleashed a monster put of 20.63m, a national record and an improvement of her personal best by a massive 39cm.

Adams shook her head in disbelief and was unable to counter as her dream comeback to the very top after two tough years fell just short.

"I‘m just so happy. Just everything. I knew that was the last throw and I‘ve got nothing after this," Carter said.

She added in the direction of her father: "He‘s given me everything that he knows to be the best shot putter I can be. My family‘s so awesome. They help me be the person I can be."

Adams dominated the sport between 2008 and 2014, winning four outdoor and three indoor world titles in the period apart from her two Olympic golds, the second coming after the initial winner Nadzeya Ostapchuk was caught doping.

So big was her dominance that Adams went unbeaten in 56 events overall between August 2010 and May 2015.

But several injury setbacks and operations than harmed her, and Adams decided to miss the 2015 worlds due to lack of form.

She rediscovered it this year and came to Rio with the number two put of the season of 20.19m, with only China‘s Gong Lijiao better on 20.43m.

While Gong was fourth Friday and German world champion Christina Schwanitz sixth - it was the 2015 worlds bronze medallist Carter who handed Adams the first defeat at a big outdoor event since the 2005 worlds where Adams took silver.

But Adams had no complaints given her struggles over the past years.

"I‘m very happy with this performance. It is a season‘s best. I‘ve struggled last year and through this year," she said. "It was pretty tight until the last round."
