The Hague (dpa) - The Netherlands has used a new law for the first time to revoke the citizenship of four jihadists.

The four men had joined terrorist militias such as Islamic State in Syria, Justice Minister Stef Blok said on Wednesday.

In March, a law entered into force which allows the state to strip people of their citizenship as a matter of national security.

The four men, who are all Moroccan citizens, will no longer be able to legally enter the Netherlands and other countries in the free-movement Schengen Area, Blok said.

The new law allows someone to be stripped of his or her citizenship even if the person hasn‘t yet been convicted of a crime.

Dutch citizenship can only be revoked from people with two nationalities.
