Tel Aviv (dpa) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to arrive in India on Sunday for a visit billed as an effort to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties.

Netanyahu will visit Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat during his five-day visit. He is set to hold meetings with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and External Affairs Minister Sushama Swaraj.

The visit comes after India voted in favour of a UN resolution rejecting US President Donald Trump‘s move to declare Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital.

During the visit, Israel and India will sign bilateral agreements in the fields of energy, cinema co-production, aviation, cyber security, and mutual investment.

"We are strengthening ties between Israel and this important global power. This serves our security, economic, trade and tourism interests, as well as many other areas," Netanyahu said on the tarmac of Israel‘s Ben Gurion Airport before leaving late Saturday.

Accompanying the Israeli premier will be a large business delegation and 12-year-old Moshe Holtzberg, who lost his parents in a 2008 attack on a Jewish centre in Mumbai.

Netanyahu will meet with Jewish community leaders, senior Bollywood figures, visit Gandhi‘s tomb in Delhi, and attend a memorial ceremony for the victims of the 2008 Mumbai bombings.

The Israeli Prime Minister‘s Office said the visit marks 25 years of Israel-India diplomatic relations. In July, Modi became the first sitting Indian head of government to visit Israel.
