Tel Aviv (dpa) - Israel‘s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hit back at recommendations by Israeli police to indict him on bribery charges.

Netanyahu described allegations that he accepted bribes from billionaires and a newspaper mogul as "biased and extreme" that "don‘t hold water."

"As I said to you yesterday I am sure that the truth will come to light. Nothing will come out of this," he said at a conference of local municipality leaders in Tel Aviv.

The police announcement on Tuesday led to increased calls for Netanyahu to resign among opposition members, but the conservative premier‘s supporters have rallied around him.

Netanyahu‘s governing coalition is expected to remain stable after a Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon, a key member, said he would not resign unless Israel‘s attorney general issues a formal indictment of the prime minister.

Education Minister Naftali Bennett, head of the Jewish Home party, is expected to issue a similar statement later on Wednesday.

On Tuesday Israeli police issued the findings of an over-year-long investigation which alleged that the prime minister and his family accepted around 1 million shekels‘ (280,000 dollars‘) worth of cigars, champagne, and jewellery from two billionaires.

In a separate case, police said the premier held back-room negotiations with a newspaper publisher to weaken a competing newspaper.

Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit could take months to decide on whether to pursue a case following the police recommendations.
