Neo-fascist politician beaten in action deemed 'exemplary' by mob

Rome (dpa) - A local representative of Italy‘s neo-fascist Forza Nuova party was pulled off the street, tied up and beaten by an anonymous group of people in Palermo, Sicily.

Massimo Ursino, provincial leader of Forza Nuova, was assaulted Tuesday in the central Via Dante. News of the attack was reported by several Wednesday newspapers.

Ursino was "hit in an exemplary manner while walking downtown. He was blocked, immobilized and tied up with tape, and left on the street with no possibility of escape," the attackers said.

They sent a statement and a video of the attack to local media outlet Palermo Today, presenting their actions as a warning against a Saturday visit by Forza Nuova national leader Roberto Fiore.

"Palermo is anti-fascist in deeds and everyday actions of its inhabitants. There is no room for fascism in Palermo," the anonymous group said.

Fiore, referring to far-left terrorists from the 1970s and 1980s, said the attack marked a "return to [Red] Brigades methods," and confirmed his trip to Palermo.

Forza Nuova is standing in March 4 general elections as part of the "Italy to the Italians" extreme-right alliance. It is not expected to clear a 3-per-cent threshold to enter parliament.

Italy is in the middle of a a nationwide debate about the risk of a neo-fascist revival, sparked by the February 3 non-fatal shooting of six African migrants in the central town of Macerata.

The attacker was a neo-Nazi who performed a fascist salute while draped in the Italian flag when he was arrested. He said he acted to avenge the murder of an 18-year-old girl, which has been blamed on Nigerian migrants.
