Stockholm (dpa) - The mother of a young black boy who modelled a hoodie in a controversial publicity photo for the Swedish clothing retailer Hennes & Mauritz has challenged claims that it was racist.

"I don‘t think the sweater is racist, but I know what racism is," Teresa Mango told Swedish broadcaster SVT on Thursday.

"I have been called a monkey myself and am aware of the history, and I don‘t see the connection in this case. But we have to respect each other‘s views," she said in her first interview with Swedish media.

Mango‘s family, who has roots in Kenya, live in Ronninge, a suburb south of Stockholm. Mango said that she received threats and hateful comments after she urged critics on social media to "get over it."

Many had reacted angrily over the photo featuring her 5-year-old son wearing a hoodie with the words "Coolest monkey in the jungle."

H&M apologized last week, saying that it had removed the photo and that the sweater is no longer for sale.

The young boy has been a model since October and receives assignments via an agency.

His parents said they couldn‘t recall who attended the photo shoot with the controversial hoodie and that their son had tried on about 100 items over the course of the shoot, according to the SVT report.

Their son was unaware of the uproar, but his parents have conveyed all the supportive messages received from around the world. The family accepted H&M‘s apology but has hired an attorney, SVT said.
