Moscow makes fresh accusations against former anti-doping lab head

Moscow (dpa) - Russian federal investigators have made fresh accusations against the whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov. The accusations come as part of ongoing criminal proceedings against the ex-head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory.

Having already been charged with abuse of authority, Rodchenkov now stands accused not just of participating in systematic doping, but of advancing the programme significantly, Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for the Russian investigative authorities, said on Monday in Moscow.

"There is reason to assume that Rodchenkov not only carried out such processes, but that he was also their author and organiser," Markin continued.

The authorities referred to witness statements, according to which Rodchenkov allegedly sourced illegal substances in the USA and sold them on for his personal gain, Markin said.

Rodchenkov, who now lives in a secret location in the United States, made claims last month of a doping cover-up at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, with the Russian sports ministry and the FSB security service closely involved.

The New York Times quoted Rodchenkov as saying that at least 15 Russian medallists (out of 33 in total) were using illegal substances at the Games as part of a state-run programme.
