Morrison denies that Israel shift risks trade deal with Indonesia

Sydney (dpa) - Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison denied Wednesday that his surprise shift towards recognising Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital endangered trade relations with Indonesia.

Morrison told reporters in Canberra that he had been in contact with Indonesian president Joko Widodo to explain his Tuesday statement that he was "open" to moving the Australian embassy to Jerusalem while still supporting the two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians.

Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation in the world, is a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause and warned such a move could undermine the peace process.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi reacted by urging Australia "not conduct any action that could undermine the peace process and global security."

Morrison said he had been assured an imminent major trade pact with Indonesia was on track and not affected by his Israel statement.

"Indonesia has made clear on the public record that our agreement with them is on track for finalisation this year," Morrison told reporters.

"I think people respect that countries will take positions on things from time to time. What both Indonesia and Australia are committed to is a two-state solution when it comes to the Middle East."

The Labor opposition said Morrison‘s shift on Israel was a cynical attempt to attract the Jewish vote in the seat of Wentworth which has a by-election on Saturday.

The wealthy harbourside electorate, which is vacant after Malcolm Turnbull was deposed as prime minister and quit politics, contains the highest concentration of Jewish voters in Australia.

The government faces a strong challenge from an independent. Losing the seat would cost the government its one-seat majority, forcing it to rely on independent members and the speaker to pass legislation.
