Bari, tourist port

Day 1
Point of departure: Bari Central Railway Station (km 0)
Reset your cyclecomputer under the metal table of Trenitalia-Bari. With the station behind you, head down via Caduti di via Fani and the bike route of viale Unità d’Italia. Continue for the entire length (km 1.8). Follow indications for Tangenziale-Matera.
BITETTO (km 16.3 from Bari), m 139.
At the first houses, keep right and follow the obligatory turn to the left: take the secondary road from Modugno. After about 100 metres, on your right, you will see the historic city gates of Bitetto (Portapiscina), with the majestic Palace of the Dukes of Noja next to them. Continue towards Palo del Colle (km 22.8), m 177. Follow the indications for Mariotto-Palombaio. At this point it is advisable to head through Ruvo, because a break will help prepare you for the territory to come, that of the Alta Murgia Park, which is spectacular, but somewhat difficult: you will find no water or refreshments, with difficult uphill climbs, almost always under the sun, and often with headwind.

Day 2
CASTEL DEL MONTE (km 70.7 from Bari, 25.0 from Ruvo), m 540.
Castel del Monte is of exceptionally universal value for the perfection of its forms, the harmony and fusion of the cultural elements from Northern of Europe, from the Muslim world and classical antiquities. It is a unique masterpiece of medieval architecture that reflects the humanism of its founder: Frederick II of Swabia”. This is the reason why UNESCO, in 1996, declared the castle a World Heritage Site to summarise its uniqueness.
Andria, Castel del Monte

The cyclocomputer should indicate 26 km in front of the castle portal. After the visit, back to your bike to head back down the same road as far as the Ruvo-Minervino crossroads on the ex-SS 170 (km 1.8): turn right here towards Minervino, leaving the state road after about 4 kilometres, following indications for Montegrosso. From this point you will take a wide but lightly-trafficked road that follows the gentle hills of the high plain, offering panoramic views and wonderful silences in a landscape that can be defined as almost lunar. Just over one kilometre from the crossrorads, the road crosses a pine and cypress woods and you meet the dirt road that runs along the main canal of the Puglia Aqueduct.

MINERVINO MURGE (km 95.5 from Bari, 24.8 from Castel del Monte), m 444.
(Intermodes: Minervino Murge is located on the Barletta-Spinazzola line of Trenitalia, and can therefore be reached from Bari with the Train+Bike formula, taking at train on the Bari-Foggia line to Barletta and a second train to Minervino)
