Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - American Michael Phelps on Tuesday won the 20th Olympic gold medal of his career by holding off a brilliant challenge from Japan‘s Masata Sakai to win the men‘s 200-metre butterfly.

Phelps is the most decorated Olympic athlete in history and built on his existing legend with a dramatic victory for his 24th medal overall. Sakai closed over the last 50 metres and fell just four hundredths of a second short as Phelps held on to win in 1 minute 53.36 seconds.

Hungary‘s Tamas Kenderesi took the bronze with reigning Olympic champion Chad le Clos, who beat Phelps by fractions in the London 2012 edition, out of the medals in fourth.

Moments earlier United States teenager Katy Ledecky stormed to victory in the women‘s 200-metre freestyle for her second gold of the Games.

Ledecky trailed Australia‘s Emma McKeon after 100 metres but ramped up the pace in the second half to win in 1 minute 53.73 seconds. McKeon finished third with Sweden‘s Sarah Sjostrom adding to her Rio medal collection with silver.

The victory means the teenage Ledecky retains her record of never having lost an individual final on the international stage and remains on track for a sweep of the freestyle golds from 200m through 800m.

Later Hungary‘s Katinka Hosszu chases a third Rio gold in the women‘s 200m individual medley. There is also the men‘s 4x200m freestyle relay.
