Merkel weighs fourth term as German chancellor
Angela Merkel said Sunday she has not ruled out running for a fourth term as German chancellor in 2017, as Europe's most powerful leader continues to enjoy high approval ratings after nearly 10 years in office.

Berlin (dpa) - "Everything will be decided at the appropriate time," she in an interview with the public broadcaster ZDF. "That time has not yet been reached."
Winning another four-year term in 2017 would mean Merkel, a trained quantum physicist who grew up in the former communist East Germany to become Germany‘s first female chancellor, would challenge the 16-year reign of her onetime mentor Helmut Kohl.

According to an unsourced report from Der Spiegel magazine, Merkel held a meeting with top aides and members of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to discuss an election campaign strategy.

Voter support for Merkel‘s centre-right CDU and her Bavarian-based Christian Social Union (CSU) sister party stands at 43 per cent, a survey published in the Bild tabloid showed Sunday. The results indicate the conservative bloc has a chance at an absolute majority in the 2017 parliamentary election.

The weekly Emnid poll surveyed 2,436 people from August 6-12.
