Frankfurt (dpa) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to open the Frankfurt car show (IAA) on Thursday, throwing a spotlight on German carmakers‘ troubled transition to sustainable mobility just 10 days ahead of an election in which she is seeking a fourth term.

Merkel will take a two-hour tour of the venue in Germany‘s financial capital and will come together with leaders of Germany‘s car industry, which employs around 800,000 people and is often considered a barometer of the German economy.

The chancellor, whose Christian Democrats (CDU) command a comfortable lead over their rivals ahead of the September 24 poll, has criticized German carmakers including Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler for their controversial emissions strategies.

However, Merkel - sometimes referred to as "Autokanzlerin," or "car chancellor" - has also faced pressure for being too close to powerful carmakers in an effort to retain jobs and boost the country‘s gross domestic product (GDP).

German car manufacturers are also being investigated by European regulators amid allegations of anti-competitive collusion.

The IAA, one of the world‘s most important car shows, will focus this year on "automated driving, electric mobility and the urban mobility concepts of tomorrow," while carmakers will also showcase new, high horsepower vehicles.
