Merkel rival Martin Schulz declares: 'I'll be chancellor'

Berlin (dpa) - Six weeks before the German elections and far behind in the popularity polls, Martin Schulz said on Sunday he was still confident of ending Angela Merkel‘s 12 years in power and taking over the chancellorship.

"I reckon that I have a good chance of leading the next federal government," the Social Democrat (SPD) candidate told public broadcaster ZDF.

He then added: "I‘ll be chancellor."

Schulz‘s centre-left party is trailing Merkel‘s conservatives by double digits in the opinion polls.

According to the latest Politbarometer poll, which is regularly commissioned by ZDF, Merkel‘s Christian Democrats (CDU) are at 40 per cent while Schulz‘s party is at 24 per cent.

Schulz said in the interview that he was open to working with the CDU in a coalition government, with him as chancellor.

"I have nothing against a grand coalition under my leadership. If the CDU wants to enter it as a junior partner, they should consider it."

His campaign themes of education, research, infrastructure development and social justice have so far failed to fire up voters, surveys indicate.

Instead, it has been the CDU‘s attempt to portray Merkel as a safe pair of hands in a turbulent world shaped by an unpredictable White House, Britain‘s exit from the European Union and now an escalating war of words over North Korea that has mobilized German voters.
