Paris (dpa) - French judges on Friday placed a man under formal investigation in relation to August‘s deadly terrorist attacks in the Spanish cities of Barcelona and Cambrils.

The man, born in 1986, is facing potential charges of terrorist conspiracy, a judicial source said.

He was arrested on Tuesday in the southern city of Albi. Two other people arrested on the same day were released without charge earlier on Friday.

Sixteen people were killed and 130 wounded on the night of August 17-18 when attackers deliberately rammed vehicles into pedestrians in the Catalan capital Barcelona and the seaside resort of Cambrils.

Police said a 12-member terrorist cell was behind the carnage. Two died in an accidental explosion the day before the attacks, and six were killed by police.

Two surviving suspects are behind bars in Spain, with another two released on bail.

France‘s top anti-terrorism prosecutor revealed in late August that several of the suspects had been in the Paris region days before the attacks.

Investigators were trying to work out the reason for their trip and whether they had been in contact with any other people of interest in France, prosecutor Francois Molins said at the time.
