Valletta (dpa) - Malta‘s Prime Minister Joseph Muscat strongly rejected claims on Thursday that he or his wife were the beneficial owners of a secret Panama-based company.

Muscat called a news conference just minutes after popular blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia claimed a company cited in the Panama Papers, Egrant Inc, was owned by his wife Michelle.

"This is the biggest political lie ever told in this country. In front of the Maltese public, I swear, I categorically deny I had, or have, any type of undeclared account or company in Malta or overseas," he said.

Muscat challenged Caruana Galizia to publish any proof to back up her claims and insisted that such documentation would have to be authenticated.

He said he would take legal action against Caruana Galizia and the opposition party media for repeating the claims.

In a blog post uploaded Thursday evening, Caruana Galizia said she was in possession of documents held at a small bank in Malta showing declarations of trust that shares in "Egrant Inc are held by Mossack Fonseca nominees for Mrs Michelle Muscat."

The Maltese government has already been rocked by the Panama Papers scandal, which showed that minister Konrad Mizzi and the prime minister chief of staff Keith Schembri had set up their own companies in Panama.
