Maltese minister decries 'smears' linking him to journalist's death

Valletta (dpa) - Attempts by reporters to link Malta‘s economy minister to the alleged murderer of a journalist are "highly damaging and false smears," said the official on Monday as he lashed out at his critics.

Chris Cardona accused the international media of speculating and "falling into the trap of Maltese partisan politics."

He was reacting to the Daphne Project, a collaborative journalistic network intended to continue the works of slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, which issued a report on Monday linking him to Alfred Degiorgio, one of three men charged with killing the journalist.

Citing phone logs, the Daphne Project claimed an unnamed fuel smuggler phoned Cardona after conducting a conversation with the slain journalist, around a year before her death. The smuggler then called Degiorgio.

Earlier this year, the Daphne Project had reported that Cardona had been seen speaking to Degiorgio at a bar.

In a statement, Cardona urged journalists to pass any relevant information they might have about the murder to authorities "rather than leave it for further stage-managed revelations."

He reiterated that he had given a statement to the police as well as the chief prosecutor.

Caruana Galizia was murdered a year ago in a car bombing. Though three men have been charged with her murder, the mastermind remains at large.
