Valletta (dpa) - Malta lowered the voting age from 18 to 16 for all elections following unanimous parliamentary approval on Monday night.

All 64 Maltese lawmakers voted in favour of the change.

Malta became the second EU state after Austria to lower the voting age with the 2019 European elections giving 16 and 17-year-olds the chance to vote for the first time.

"Parliament amends Constitution unanimously. We have made history, again," Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said in a tweet right after the vote.

Both main political parties had pledged to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 in their electoral manifestos. The move did not enjoy broad approval, including the University Students Council which said the current educational framework did not adequately prepare youth to vote.

The age of sexual consent remains fixed at 18.
