Paris (dpa) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday called upon Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make "brave gestures" towards the Palestinian people, at a meeting of the leaders in Paris.

At a joint press conference following the meeting, Macron said he had urged Netanyahu "to emerge from the current impasse," and pointed to a potential freeze on Israel‘s settlement policy as a move that could ease tensions in the region.

Following US President Donald Trump‘s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, thousands of Palestinians had rioted over the weekend. The unilateral diplomatic move has been sharply criticized internationally.

At the press conference, Macron also said he had expressed his disapproval of Trump‘s recent statements to the Israeli leader.

France considers the decision to run contrary to international law to be dangerous for peace, Macron said. At the same time, he condemned "with the utmost clarity, every form of attack against Israel in the past hours and days."
