Paris (dpa) - Supporters of French President Emmanuel Macron have approved a new charter for his centrist La Republique en Marche (The Republic on the Move) party.

The party, founded as an association in April 2016, announced Thursday that 90.6 per cent of those taking part in the online vote approved the new regulations, which dissidents have criticized for a lack of internal democracy.

Thirty-two per cent of eligible members - those who had joined before April 9, ahead of the presidential elections - took part in the vote.

Membership of the party can be taken up online free of charge by anyone who commits to its principles.

The charter sets out the party‘s commitment to democracy and "progressive values" including equal opportunities, equality of the sexes, solidarity, secularism, and economic freedoms.

It also says that France‘s place in the European Union is an "essential principle."

Dissidents criticized the lack of any elected representation of ordinary party members in the organization under the new rules.

The party council, described as its "parliament," is to be composed three-quarters of elected public representatives and appointed local organizers.

One quarter of the council members will be ordinary members but they will be chosen by lot rather than elected.

The party‘s election candidates will be chosen by selection committees appointed by the executive, as was the case for this year‘s parliamentary elections when the party won 308 of the National Assembly‘s 577 seats.
