Paris (dpa) - French President Emmanuel Macron used his New Year‘s speech to call on European citizens to support his "great project" for the continent.

The outspoken pro-European has set out an agenda for greater European integration since his election as France‘s youngest-ever president, including the establishment of a European budget and a European finance minister.

"I need your determination to enact this European awakening and together we must not give any ground to the nationalists or sceptics," he said.

"We have to rediscover a European ambition, to find a more sovereign Europe, one that is more united, more democratic because it is good for our peoples," he said.
