Frankfurt (dpa) - Lufthansa said Wednesday that it had extended the contract of its chief executive, Carsten Spohr, by another five years, meaning he will lead Germany‘s biggest airline until 2023.

Spohr, who took over from Christoph Frank in 2014, has overseen protracted negotiations with Lufthansa pilots, the expansion of its budget airline Eurowings and the partial takeover of now-defunct airline Air Berlin.

Less than a year into his tenure, Spohr had to deal with the aftermath of the Germanwings crash. Investigators concluded that co-pilot Andreas Lubitz purposefully downed the plane over the French Alps.

Lufthansa will report its annual financial results on Thursday, with analysts expecting record profits.
