Long-time Montenegrin leader Djukanovic launches presidential bid

Belgrade (dpa) - Montenegro‘s long-time leader Milo Djukanovic announced Monday he would run for president in next month‘s election, marking a return from his self-imposed political retirement.

Djukanovic engineered Montenegro‘s split from Serbia in 2006 and also steered the tiny country away from its traditional alliance with Russia and toward the West - Montenegro last year became NATO‘s latest member.

"This decision reflects my responsibility in relation to what is the legacy and the requirement for the future of Montenegro," Djukanovic said after his Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) backed his candidacy.

He added that he had not intended to return to a political leadership role, but that "personal, political and public commitments" spurred him to step in.

Djukanovic, 56, served as prime minister or president from 1991 until just after elections in October 2016, except during two brief periods when he stepped down to run a private business.

However, he never relinquished his leading role in the DPS.

Montenegro‘s turning away from Russia has raised tensions within the country.

On the day of the October 2016 elections, Montenegrin police arrested a group of people it accused of plotting a coup and Djukanovic directly accused Moscow of having a role in it.

The presidential election will be held on April 15.
