London (dpa) - The British government is to publish a series of Brexit strategy papers starting from this week, ahead of a third round of talks between London and Brussels at the end of August.

Brexit Secretary David Davis said Sunday the papers would mark an "important next step" towards delivering on last year‘s vote to leave the European Union.

One of the papers will focus on the future border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, amid fears in Dublin that a return to a "hard" border could lead to economic losses and stall the peace process in Northern Ireland.

Other papers will address the availability of goods for the EU and Britain and access to official documents after London has exited the bloc.

A second batch of papers will be released ahead of an October meeting of the European Council, when EU leaders are expected to decide whether enough progress has been made to proceed to talks on a future relationship.

Negotiations between Britain and the EU, which began in late June, have so far produced no concrete results, and Brussels has asked London to provide a clear position on key Brexit issues by the end of August.

Brussels has refused to start talks on a post-Brexit relationship with London until the immediate issues of Britain‘s withdrawal, including its "divorce bill," have been settled.

However, sources at London‘s Department for Exiting the EU insisted Sunday that the two were "inextricably linked."

The third round of negotiations is due to start on August 28.
