Lidl slammed for airbrushing crosses from church in Italian ad

Rome (dpa) - Lidl has sparked anger in northern Italy for allegedly airbrushing the cross from a photo of a church in advertising material, just a month after a similar incident involving its packaging.

The German supermarket had removed the symbol from a photo of a historic church in the Ligurian town of Dolceacqua, which it hung in a store in the nearby town of Camporosso.

After Dolceacqua‘s mayor complained about the missing cross, Lidl said Wednesday it had taken the photo from a stock photo database.

"We didn‘t realize the cross was missing from the photo we bought," a statement said. "The matter is not a deliberate marketing strategy but rather a result of carelessness, for which we apologize to the residents of Dolceacqua."

The offending picture had been removed and the supermarket had apologized to the mayor, the statement said.

Lidl came under fire last month in several European countries for airbrushing the cross from a church in Santorini pictured on packaging for its Greek-style food range.

The supermarket said at the time it was part of its policy of remaining politically and religiously neutral.
