Beirut (dpa) - The Lebanese army on Saturday announced the start of a military offensive to clear Islamic State militants from the border with Syria.

Army units using heavy artillery and aircraft targeted several IS positions and gathering spots in Ras Baalbek and Qaa, causing direct casualties among their ranks, Lebanon‘s official National News Agency NNA reported.

Areas in north-eastern Lebanon close to the Syrian border are held by Islamic State. A Lebanese army offensive to oust the jihadist movement from the area has been expected for some time.

Earlier this month, more than 1,000 IS fighters as well as civilians left the area on the border and returned to Syria.

Syria‘s civil war, now in its seventh year, has devastated the country, claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced about half of the pre-war population of 22 million.
