LEAD: Man charged after hurling plastic bottle in Olympic stadium Eds: Updates with charges, details, quotes
Europe
London (dpa) - A 34-year-old spectator who threw a plastic bottle
on to the track at the men‘s 100-metre final was charged with a
public order offence Tuesday as Olympic organizers pledged a "zero
tolerance" approach to attempts to disrupt the Games.
"Throwing a bottle onto the field of play is unacceptable, and it‘s not just unacceptable at an Olympic Games, it‘s unacceptable at any sports venue," LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe said.
"The guy was removed and anybody that does that in future will be removed, so there is zero tolerance to anything like that," he added.
The man, from near Leeds in northern England, was charged with "intentionally causing harassment, alarm or distress" and would appear in court later Tuesday, a police spokesman said.
He was arrested in the stadium Sunday evening, following the incident which occurred during the 100m finals, won by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
Earlier, a police spokesman said a man had been heard shouting abuse and was seen throwing a bottle immediately before the race, after the starter told the runners to "set."
The incident had "no impact on the competitors or the event," said LOCOG.
Speaking after the race, US sprinter Justin Gatlin, who won bronze, said: "It was a little distraction and I didn‘t know what it was. But when you‘re in those blocks and the whole stadium‘s quiet you can hear a pin drop."
Fellow Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake said: "I was so focused I didn‘t see anything. I was so focused on just running to the line."
Bolt told reporters he had been unaware of the incident. "No, I keep hearing that. I don‘t know who would have done that."
Edith Bosch, the Netherlands‘ world judo champion, who was sitting close by, said she intervened after the incident.
"I had seen the man walking around earlier and said to people around me that he was a peculiar bloke. Then he threw that bottle and in my emotion I hit him on the back with the flat of my hand," she told Dutch TV.
"Then he was scooped up by the security. However, he did make me miss the final, and I am very sad about that."
Coe said it was "poetic justice" that the troublemaker should have been sitting next to a judo star.
"I‘m not suggesting vigilantism but it was actually poetic justice that they happened to be sitting next to a judo player," he told a news conference. dpa aet bwh Author: Anna Tomforde
