LEAD: Franklin takes gold in record time, Phelps wins butterfly

London (dpa) - American teenager Missy Franklin on Friday won gold
in the 200-metre backstroke at the London Olympics in a world record
2 minutes 04.06 seconds.
Her time beat the world record of Beijing champion Kirsty Coventry by 0.75 seconds.
Franklin, who also won the 100m backstroke and was on the winning 4x200m medley relay team and has a bronze from the 4x100m freestyle relay, led from the start as she beat Russian Anastasia Zueva by 1.86 seconds. Bronze went to Elizabeth Beisel of the US.
In the men‘s 100m butterfly superstar Michael Phelps won his 21st Olympic medal as he took gold ahead of South African Chad le Clos, who had beaten him in the 200m.
Russian Evgeny Korotyshkin tied with le Clos for the silver on 51.44 - 0.23 behind Phelps.
The other events on the programme in the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park are the final of the women‘s 800m freestyle and the semi-finals of the 50m freestyle, as well as the finals of the men‘s 50m freestyle. dpa adh mis
