London (dpa) - Great Britain dominated day two of the track cycling at the velodrome on Friday as "sprint queen" Victoria Pendleton won the women‘s Keirin and the men‘s team pursuit quartet broke the world record on the way to gold.

Denied the chance of a gold in the women‘s team sprint on day one due to an illegal change, Pendleton made up for it with a brilliant ride to win her second Olympic gold, having triumphed in the sprint in Beijing.

Shuang Guo of China took the silver with Wai Sze Lee of Hong Kong clinching the bronze. Pre-race favourite, Anna Meares of Australia, finished outside the medals.

Earlier, Geraint Thomas, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Peter Kennaugh beat Australia in the final of the men‘s team pursuit in a blistering 3 minutes 51.659 seconds, breaking the record they had set in qualifying on Thursday.

Australia were almost three seconds behind in 3.54.581 while New Zealand won the race-off for bronze against Russia.

Kennaugh paid tribute to his team-mates, saying: "It is amazing. It is a team event but we have to take our hats off to Ed Clancy and Steven Burke, they rode amazing."

Thomas, who skipped the Tour de France to prepare for the Olympics, said sickness almost ruined their hopes.

"I was ill last week and it was tough mentally to get back to where I was," he said. "Without these boys I couldn‘t have done it - to finish it off was amazing."

It was a virtually-perfect day for Britain‘s cyclists as the women‘s team pursuit quartet also set a world record in the qualifying round.

The team of Dani King, Laura Trott and Jo Rowsell scorched around the track in 3.15.669 minutes, almost four seconds faster than their nearest challengers, the United States. dpa scl mis
