Lavrov praises German minister's words on Iran deal, North Korea

By our dpa-correspondent and Europe Online    auf Facebook posten  Auf Twitter posten
New York (dpa) - Russia‘s foreign minister on Friday echoed the German foreign minister‘s argument that, if the Iran nuclear deal falls apart, North Korea won‘t be able to trust the international community.

Sigmar Gabriel "talked about this very convincingly" in his speech at the UN General Assembly, Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference at UN headquarters in New York.

Gabriel said reinstating unilateral sanctions against Iran and withdrawing from the deal would make it harder to reach agreement with North Korea on its nuclear programme.

He asked how North Korea was expected to trust the other countries if they proved the Iran deal "won‘t be upheld and isn‘t worth the paper its written on?"

Lavrov said the deal was "not only a commitment, but something done" that shouldn‘t be taken back.

"Right now, North Korea is being told ‘renounce the nuclear weapons and we will lift the sanctions‘"

"Right now, if this agreement on the Iran nuclear deal will fall apart then North Korea would say, why do I need to negotiate with you if you do not carry out your promises?"
