Latvia's president calls for swift resolution of corruption probe

Riga (dpa) - Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis on Wednesday called for a swift resolution of the corruption investigation into central bank chief Ilmars Rimsevics.

"The investigation should not be influenced and must be completed as quickly as possible because this issue concerns the reputation of the state and the financial system," Vejonis said after a meeting with Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis in Riga.

Kucinskis emphasized that the investigation into Rimsevics had no link with any other operations at a Latvian commercial bank. He assured that there was no danger to the Latvian financial system.

Rimsevics earlier suggested he could have been targeted by commercial banks seeking to damage Latvia‘s reputation. He said he had received death threats that he reported to authorities.

The 52-year-old was detained at the weekend on suspicion of having demanded and accepted bribe money of at least 100,000 euros (125,000 dollars). He was released on bail on Monday evening.

Rimsevics has headed the Baltic state‘s highest financial institution since 2001. He has also been a member of the European Central Bank‘s governing council since Latvia joined the eurozone in 2014.

Several high-ranking officials, including Latvian Finance Minister Dana Reizniece-Ozola, have called for him to step down.

Rimsevics did not attend a European Central Bank meeting in Frankfurt on Wednesday. His deputy, Zoja Razmusa, was supposed to attend instead, a spokesman told dpa.
