Belgrade (dpa) - Serbs in northern Kosovo began voting Tuesday in a referendum to recognize or reject the authority of Pristina.

Nearly all of the 35,500 voters in four Serb municipalities were expected to answer with "no" to the question, "Do you support the institutions of the so-called Republic of Kosovo?" The referendum will have no legal effect.

Ethnic Albanians are the majority in Kosovo, but Serbs dominate the north and fiercely reject the authority of the government in Pristina, insisting that they live under Serbia‘s sovereignty.

The former province declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has been recognized by the United States and most of the European Union, all of which have opposed the referendum and urged the Serbs to instead seek a broad autonomy through negotiations with Pristina.

The voting was is scheduled to last two days. dpa bb tlo ses Author: Boris Babic
