New Delhi (dpa) - Dipa Karmakar has become the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for an Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old booked a berth in artistic gymnastics for the August 5-21 Games in Rio de Janeiro during a test event in the Brazilian host city on Sunday.

"Many congratulations for taking Indian gymnastics to a new high. Dipa Karmakar, we are so proud of you," Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal wrote on Twitter.

Karmakar is the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the Olympics in 52 years. Since 1947 independence, 11 Indian male gymnasts have taken part in the Olympics - two in 1952, three in 1956 and six in 1964, broadcaster NDTV reported.

The 2012 London Games were India‘s most successful Olympics, with its biggest medals haul of two silver and four bronze.
