Paris (dpa) - The founder of France‘s far-right National Front, Jean-Marie Le Pen, Wednesday lost an appeal against a 30,000-euro (31,700-dollar) fine for comments belittling the Holocaust, news agency Agence France-Presse reported.

The 88-year-old was handed the fine last year for his repeated description of the Nazi gas chambers as a "detail" of World War II.

He was expelled from the party he founded in 2015, partly because of those comments.

The party is now led by his daughter, Marine Le Pen, who is heading the polls ahead of presidential elections due to take place in April and May.

The appeals court decision comes two days after the elder Le Pen also lost an appeal against a 5,000 euro fine for offensive comments he made on the purported smell of Roma people in the city of Nice.

Le Pen was previously fined 5,000 euros in 2013 for comparing Roma to thieves.
