Tokyo (dpa) - The embattled golf venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics said on Monday that it had decided to extend full membership to women.

Kasumigaseki Golf Club in Kawagoe City, 44 kilometres north-west of Tokyo, said the decision was made during its executive board meeting.

The private golf club, established in 1929, came under fire in January when Yuriko Koike, Tokyo‘s first female governor, criticized its policy of excluding women from full membership.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also said the club‘s policy was contrary to the Olympic spirit.

Monday‘s decision came three days after IOC President Thomas Bach, who was in South Korea, warned that the 2020 golf venue might have to be changed if the club continued to discriminate against women.

"We decided to open the path for women, taking into consideration the trends of the world and thinking about the future regardless of the Olympics," the club‘s manager Hiroshi Imaizumi said.

IOC vice president John Coates welcomed the change.

"We can now look forward to a great Olympic golf tournament at Kasumigaseki Country Club at Tokyo 2020. As we have said all along, gender equality is a fundamental principle of the Olympic movement and an important part of Olympic Agenda 2020, and we believe this decision now reflects this," he said.

Golf returned to the Olympics at the 2016 Rio Games following a break of 112 years.
