Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - German 400-metre hurdles champion Jackie Baumann failed to step in the footsteps of her gold medal-winning father Dieter Baumann in her Olympic debut on Monday when she went out in the 400 metres hurdles heats.

Baumann had to settle for sixth in her race on a wet track in 59.04 seconds, almost three seconds off her personal best.

"I can‘t really explain it," the 20-year-old national champion said after her race, before adding that she had enjoyed her first Olympic experience despite her poor performance.

"There are so many complaints being made, but I don‘t agree," she said. "I‘ve gotta say, it‘s all just so cool."

Baumann‘s father Dieter famously won Olympic 5,000m gold in 1992 in Barcelona. She is coached by her mother, Isabelle Baumann.
