Italy's Salvini says government deal with Five Star is 'possible'

Rome (dpa) - Italy‘s far-right League party and the anti-establishment Five Star Movement (M5S) could form a government together, League leader Matteo Salvini suggested Wednesday.

Salvini hedged the comment, saying no quick end was in sight to the country‘s political stalemate.

"I think you will need to be patient for a few weeks," he said at the Foreign Press Association in Rome.

The League and M5S made the strongest gains in March 4 general elections. Neither party commands a parliamentary majority, however, leaving open the question of who will next rule Italy.

"We will be working in the coming weeks to find a majority, what I can rule out is that this majority will include the losers, that is the [centre-left] PD," Salvini told reporters.

Pressed on whether his remarks meant that a deal with M5S leader Di Maio was on the cards, Salvini said: "Except for the PD, everything is possible."

The M5S would have to accept a common agenda for the first year of government, Salvini said, signalling that he would even be ready to give up his prime ministerial ambitions for the sake of a deal.

"There are no preliminary red lines on names and posts," he said.

"I‘d like to tell Italians what the next government would do in its first year. If there is a point-by-point, month-per-month agreement on this [with the M5S], why not."
