Rome (dpa) - With his preppy looks and relative youth, Luigi Di Mario has been named, as expected, the new leader of Italy‘s anti-establishment Five Star Movement and the party‘s prime ministerial candidate.

"Luigi Di Maio is the candidate for the prime minister‘s office for the Five Star Movement," the party announced on Twitter on Saturday.

More than 37,400 people took part in the online primary, with nearly 31,000 voting for Di Maio, according to the Ansa news agency.

In addition to Di Maio, seven other party members had campaigned for the position, though the 31-year-old was always the clear favourite.

"It‘s a huge responsibility you have entrusted with me, but together, we can do it," the movement quoted Di Maio as saying after he learned of the results.

Italy‘s parliamentary elections - which must be held at the latest in early 2018 - will ask Italians to decide whether they "want to continue with just getting by, or if they want to start living," the candidate said.
