Rome (dpa) - Italy has replaced one of its consular officials in the Kurdish city of Erbil after discovering "irregularities" in the visa issuance process there, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The announcement follows a report by Italian daily Corriere della Sera alleging that visas were being peddled out of the Italian consulate in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, at 10,000 euros (just over 10,000 dollars) each.

Visas were sold at exorbitant prices to Iraqis, Kurds and Syrian refugees, including individuals who had been turned down by other countries on security concerns, according to the Corriere report.

The ministry said it has replaced the head of the visa section, and that it has reported the "irregularities" to Italian prosecutors.
