Italy prime minister candidate says he would vote to leave eurozone

Rome (dpa) - The prime ministerial candidate of Italy‘s anti-establishment Five Start Movement (M5S), Luigi Di Maio, would vote in favour of an exit from the eurozone if a referendum were to be held.

"Should there be a referendum, which would be an extreme means, I would clearly vote to leave," the 31-year-old politician said in a television interview on Monday.

General elections are due early next year in Italy with the M5S currently the strongest party in surveys.

Former prime minister Matteo Renzi, who plans to lead the Social Democratic Party in next year‘s elections, reacted promptly on Twitter, saying an exit from the eurozone "would be insanity for the Italian economy."

Di Maio said last year that he would consider a referendum on Italy exiting the eurozone if his party enters the government following elections.

Since then, the M5S has backed down from its plan to hold a referendum.
