Italy planning Rome migrant summit later this month

Rome (dpa) - Italy is planning to hold a summit on migrants in Rome before the end of March, an interior ministry spokesman told dpa on Thursday.

The summit of ministers from countries such as France, Germany, and some North African countries to be held at an unspecified date this month will discuss setting up "centres for migrant selection and control," the spokesman said.

Italy is currently the main European point of entry for migrants, with 15,843 having arrived so far this year, up almost 67 per cent over the same period in 2016, according to Interior Ministry data out Thursday.

"It is absolutely impossible to continue taking in whoever disembarks illegally on our coasts, without imposing any criteria for reception," Minniti told Italian daily Corriere della Sera.

"We‘re firming up deals to halt the flow of migrants in Niger, we‘re working with Ethiopia, but the matter must be broadened to a European level; it can‘t just be an Italian one," Minniti told the paper.

More than 500,000 migrants and asylum seekers reached the coasts of Italy on traffickers‘ boats in 2014-16, according to the Milan-based Institute for Multi-ethnic Studies (ISMU).
