Rome (dpa) - Three men, one from Tunisia and two from Morocco, have been expelled from Italy because of suspected links with Islamic terrorism, the Interior Ministry said Sunday.

The Tunisian suspect, 31, had a criminal record for drug offences and is believed to have spent time in Syria fighting for the Islamic State terrorist group, a statement said.

Authorities intercepted him in the central Italian town of Perugia in August, and decided to repatriate him after finding a video of jihadist propaganda by an Egyptian imam on his mobile.

The two Moroccans, aged 25 and 26, were sent home because they were in Facebook contact with Moroccan foreign fighters in Syria, from a unit including an Islamic State recruiter who used to live in Milan.

The 25-year-old was apprehended in Turin, north-western Italy, in August, while the 26-year-old was found in Bolzano, 80 kilometres south of the Austrian border, a month later.

Italy adopted legislation on the fast-track deportation of foreigners suspected of extremist tendencies, even on relatively flimsy grounds, after the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo Islamist attacks in Paris.

Interior Minister Marco Minniti has credited the law for helping spare the country from terrorist attacks. It has been applied against 228 suspects, including 96 this year, his ministry said.
