Rome (dpa) - The person in charge of Italy‘s state schools has made a bad grammatical mistake in a letter to a national newspaper, but her spokesman has taken the flak for it.

Education Minister Valeria Fedeli used the present subjunctive, rather than the imperfect subjunctive, tense in an op-ed published on Saturday by the Corriere della Sera daily.

The op-ed was about the importance of teaching history in schools. Several other national newspapers and news websites picked up on the embarrassing error on Sunday.

That prompted a public apology from Fedeli‘s spokesman Simone Collini, who said he made the mistake while editing the op-ed, without showing the final version to the minister.

"It was a serious mistake, but mine, not the minister‘s," he said in a letter published by the Il Messaggero newspaper.

Fedeli, a former trade unionist, has in the past been criticized for misrepresenting a social worker diploma as a university degree in her curriculum.
