Italian beach volley athlete suspended after failing doping test

Rome (dpa) - Viktoria Orsi Toth, an Italian female beach volley player due to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, has been suspended for doping, Italian sports authorities said Tuesday.

Orsi Toth tested positive for steroids on July 19 and was suspended from competitive sports by Italy‘s National Anti-doping Tribunal, the Italian Olympics Committee (CONI) said in a statement.

The athlete was scheduled to debut at the Rio games in a doubles match against Canada on August 8.

The ANSA news agency said that if the doping violation is confirmed in the second sample test due to be carried out Wednesday, Orsi Toth will be replaced and Italy will still play the match.
