Tel Aviv (dpa) - Israel‘s military police are seeking more information about the death of a disabled Palestinian amid protests last month against the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital, the army reported Thursday.

The army says its goal is to investigate further and gather more information out of the Gaza Strip after the death of 29-year-old Ibrahim Abu Thuraya. He was killed by a shot to the head.

The United Nations has criticized Israel‘s army for the death. An initial army report declared no improper behaviour by the soldiers involved.

"Thuraya was not shot at using live ammunition," according to a report. "It is impossible to ascertain whether Abu Thuraya was injured during attempts to quell the protest or what led to his death."

Thuraya lost his legs during in a 2008 Israeli airstrike. He was one of four Palestinians killed during a wave of protests and clashes following US President Donald Trump‘s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel‘s capital.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra‘ad Al Hussein has said that, given Thuraya‘s status as an amputee, it‘s hard to imagine he posed any threat to the soldiers.

According to Israeli newspaper Haaretz, army officials have now requested Thuraya‘s autopsy report from the Palestinian branch of the Red Crescent and are seeking a witness to the event.

The army said at the time that a group of about 3,500 Palestinians had thrown petrol bombs and rocks at soldiers during the protests, as well as rolling burning tyres in their direction. Soldiers then opened fire on the leaders of the group.
