Tel Aviv (dpa) - The Israeli army set up roadblocks and deployed extra troops on Wednesday in a manhunt for attackers who shot dead an Israeli rabbi in the northern West Bank.

The rabbi, a 35-year-old father of six from the Israeli outpost of Havat Gilad in the West Bank, was killed after attackers opened fire on his car on Tuesday evening.

He died in an ambulance on his way to hospital after the shooting, a spokesman for the emergency services said.

Hamas issued a statement late on Tuesday praising the attack as "heroic," but did not claim responsibility.

The army said that it had closed off several villages around the city of Nablus and deployed extra troops in the region. The army‘s chief of staff, Gadi Eisenkot, visited the scene of the crime on Wednesday morning.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the incident and expressed his condolences to the family of the victim.

President Reuven Rivlin wrote on Twitter that he was "deeply saddened to hear of the murderous attack," adding that "the state of Israel will not allow terror to raise its head."

Nickolay Mladenov, the UN special coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, has also condemned the attack.

"There is no justification for terror and those who condone it, praise it or glorify it," he wrote on Twitter. "The perpetrators of yesterday‘s attack must be brought to justice."

Havat Gilad is currently considered an unauthorized outpost by the Israeli government. However, the government has said it is reviewing whether it should be granted status as an official settlement.
