Munich (dpa) - Israeli President Reuven Rivlin is set to inaugurate a memorial to commemorate the victims of a hostage attack on Israeli Olympians at the 1972 Games in Munich.

Rivlin will be in Germany for the unveiling of the monument from September 5-7, his spokesman said on Monday.

Survivors of the attack as well as German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Bavarian premier Horst Seehofer will also attend the ceremony.

The Palestinian terrorist group known as the Black September Organization took members of Israel‘s Olympic team hostage at the 1972 Munich games in an effort to force the release of prisoners in Israel.

The hostage situation, including the rescue operation at a nearby airport, led to the deaths of 11 athletes and one police officer. Five terrorists were also killed.

"This memorial must stand as a witness to the danger of hate and the cruel brutality of terrorism as well as for the promise that those who spread and support terrorism will pay the price," Rivlin said in a statement.
