Isinbayeva loses Swiss appeal for Olympic start but will go to Brazil

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Yelena Isinbayeva‘s bid to compete at the Rio Olympics was rejected by the Swiss Federal Tribunal on Monday but the Russian pole vault heroine will come to Brazil next week in lobby for support to become a member of the International Olympic Commmitee (IOC) athletes‘ commission.

Isinbayeva and 100-metre hurdler Sergey Shubenkov had tried to seek a provisional ruling from the court in order to compete in Rio where the athletics competition starts on Friday.

But the court said that the IOC had defined the conditions under which athletes could compete in the wake of allegations of systematic doping in Russia, that the athletics body IAAF had banned all but the entire Russian team, and that the two athletes had not appealed until 15 days after the Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed the IAAF ruling.

"To my great regret the lawsuit was rejected. The last hope to perform at the Olympic Games has disappeared," Isinbayeva said on Instagram.

However, Isinbayeva said she would fly to Rio on Sunday as she seeks support in the athletes‘ commission election.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams said she will receive an accreditation for the athletes‘ village as she is not suspected of a doping offence and has the right to be a candidate in the election.
